Re: Lasting
I am certain this could have been done with a bit more finesse than I brought to the game...but this was something I wanted to try and it was the first time out of the gate, as who should say. All in all, I can see no downside.

Thank you.
It could be a vacation but frankly, I hate driving the RV any distance. It's old and uncomfortable and fundamentally unreliable--like me.

Feeling satisfied ...or at least hopeful...
Not sure why I am posting these photos except that the contrast of before and after pricking up will be stark, maybe even marginally interesting.

Re: Lasting
I think I've gotten better and faster. I wanted to do 14spi but when I did a practice run I backed off. I don't think I have a square awl suitable and my outsole was just too thick (@ 6mm) for 14spi.
As for my legs...pshaw, last time me and Al wore kilts, I could see you ogling us. I know it was dark but...

The PNW is in the grip of a heat spell--triple digit weather. So shorts every day for the last couple of weeks. And what is a kilt anyway but un-bifurcated shorts?
More to come...but slowly (student this next three weeks)

"water-stains"
Hello,
I sometimes have the problem of getting water stains from the counter together with the hirschkleber getting squeezed together when lasting the backside. When is the right time to put the counter in so I dont get this problem? In other words how dry does the counter have to be when inserting it in for lasting over? I hope my query was a straightforward one.

Re: Lasting
First, the counter doesn't have to be sopping. I'm sure you know that but lasting it dry doesn't work either. So, I would say that it needs to dry out to the point where it is almost back to dry looking but still moist in the interior. this state was always called "tempered" by the folks I learned from.
Second, the Hirschkleber needs to be more of a paste than a slurry. Yes, you can thin HK but I like to see it be about the consistency of...oh, I don't know...Crisco, say.
If those two considerations don't solve your problem (and they seem to answer for almost every similar situation I've encountered), try coating the flesh side of the counter (counter cover) with All Purpose. That should seal the leather and prevent moisture from wicking to the outside and staining the leather.
There may be other answers, but I hope that helps...
