Also, spotted a nice bluish-green painted pine, 2nd half 19thc shoemaker's bench, with leather seat, two drawers and lots of cubby holes, solid as she sits, comes with maybe 15 tools (rosewood shoulder sticks and adjustable peg marking wheels, plus) and a very reasonable 3-digit(!) price. Did not inspect for marks. No photos allowed. Perfectly useable for those hankering for a "real" shoe bench, versus a 1950s coffee table. Dealer was having a 20% off sale last weekend too. Well, in some sense I never left it although I don't, in fact, own a lapstone. But, for many years I have beat (hammer jacked) heel lifts. Usually on a section of railroad tie.

As you well know most modern outsole leather...depending on the tanner...is already "rolled" and sometimes double rolled. So, theoretically you wouldn't need to use a lapstone. But I like my heel lifts hard...hard as I can get them...so I'll jack any leather I think is a little too "gutless."

I do my "beating-out" on an old cast iron flat iron, handle goes between thighs. "Hammer-jacking" and railroad rails sure sound like a Wild West thing

Hi,
So I had been trying my hand at building footwear, and it just didn't work out, for a number of reasons, but I have gotten into Handbag making and this is a much better match. All that to say, I have a few pieces of equipment to sell. I may have a cobra 5110 in about 2 months, I have 3 sets of lasts, the Landis 12 L, which is difficult to sell to say the least and a few odds and ends including some vibram soles, not very many, but three styles adding up to about 25 pair, I also have some woden pegs, and some eyelets from trendware. There is a really good eyelet setter that I'm not sure I want to get rid of but might be able to be convinced. So if you are hoping I might have something contact me, or if you see something here then definitely contact me, with most of this stuff I'm pretty flexible on prices.

Interesting! But, if you don't mind, I have several questions:

First, are you sure these are real hemp? I don't speak or read French...but at one point in time linen thread was often referred to as "hemp" in English parlance. Sometimes even on the box.

Second, how does a #4 compare with a linen #10? Is it the same numbering/sizing system? The yarn on the spools that are in your photo looks quite stout by comparison. I wonder what two lengths of #4 waxed and twisted together might look like?

Hello dw,

The label of the packages mention "Fil de chanvre" which means "Thread of hemp". For what I know, the distinction in France is very clear between linen thread and hemp thread.

About the numbers mentioned in the labels, I will be honest. I don't know :-). The fact is that almost all spools are packaged. I only have #3 and #4 spools of 2 different trades unpackaged... My guess is that #8 is smaller than #4.

First I will ask to my friend @Almar if he knows the numbering of these thread.
Secondly, I can try to make macro photo of #3 and #4 threads with a measure.

I also will make some research on old french catalogs. Many I will find the information.

@dw The number of the thread seems to be a metric number, in french " le numéro métrique", shorten in "Nm".
4Nm means, 4 meters of this thread weight 1g.

So #8 is a smaller thread than #4.

Hope this answer give you enough indications.
