Regarding thimbles for last tops, I haven't seen them. Could this be something that a tinsmith could fashion? Pat Cunningham of Madison, IN can make most anything from old-fashioned hot-dipped tin.

I did notice Larry's info and we spoke. Currently I await pricing on the last thimbels; and will pass on the hinges but could use lasting tacks.

Anyone know where to get 6"x6"x14"-16" rock hard maple kiln and air dried throughout? Roughcut would be even better.

Tastes/preferences vary on lasting tacks, like most things. I prefer 8/8 [1"], or #8 hand shoe tacks from DB Gurney. Some like long slim brad-type nails, 1 1/4-1 1/2", that they can bend over. The historical lasting tacks with cube-heads are, alas, non est.

If you stop by your local woodworking store, like Woodcraft here on the east coast, the staff should be able to direct you to local woodcutters with portable sawmills. I've found these guys are a source of good rough sawn green lumber. From them I've gotten loads of 6" x 6" x 8 ft poplar and walnut that I've put in the shed to dry for a few years. And the price was dirt cheap. Also ask your town tree warden or forester. They should know who has drawn a permit for tree cutting in town.

I have already gone this route in my local state -- and spoke with a professor of wood science at Syracuse University and followed up on several leads for those with access to wood and portable mills, but I need wood that is affordable and usable now. Not keen on cutting the plastic; all those environmentally conscious types have a point.

Anyone with a shed to donate for a few years on Long Island?

HELLO, IT'S ANOTHER NEWBIE - oops, too loud, isn't it...... Ok turned the sound down a bit.

I need to know if anyone may have a stashed knife for an American lap skiver - the kind with a geared crank, driving rollers that guide the strap into the knife? My newly acquired antique bench tool has a knife I may (or may not) be able to rehab, but it does have a little ding on the corner at the edge that kinda bothers me. I've been told by kind persons on this board that I "might" perhaps find one at Pilgrim shoe supply?/ Think I have that remembered rightly. If so, good enough, if not, still looking.

What I'd REALLY love is to come across somebody who has actually USED one of these and can write brief instructional notes! Maybe it's only that boogered blade, but I am not getting much luck with it. Not nearly as nice as my Landis 30 splitter.......which I LOVE, a lot. Sigh....

If you can't find the blade you require you might consider consulting a good machine shop. They might be able to restore the blade you have or make a new one for you.

Paul is right. Simonds Industries Inc. are the largest supplier of blades that I know of in the US. They have factories in MA, OH, MI, CA, OR, and BC and Ontario in Canada also Sheffield in the UK.
Mostly they make blades for the timber industry but I've seen blades in their catalogue that'll work for splitters with a little modifacation. Try visiting your local saw doctors - not sure if you call them that in the US - guys that sharpen saws etc anyway.

A few years ago I bought some equipment and findings from a shop that had gone out of the trade. i have quite a collection of Landis and U.S.M. stitcher parts. All kinds of needle guides,loopers,set screws,etc,shuttles,many bobbins,etc. I also have a device that came off a U.S.M. stitcher that is for sewing false welts.
All kinds of springs etc. i have a sewing machine manual written by the U.S.Army that tells you how to fix the machines shown and how to destroy them to keep the foe from getting them. {W.W.2}

I was ask to make a pair of Batman Begin boots for a customer. However, I am unable to find similar type of leather used in the original boots, a mesh looking leather where the holes or imprints are diamond shape. Does any body know were I can get this type of leather or something similar?
