Tom and Alasdair, good to hear from you both, the NZ contingent. I'm glad to be back here on the hcc. I nipped out for a cup of tea a few years ago and got distracted.

Around here you can't use steel cleats at any of the golf courses and I think that's universal in Canada.

Warkov Safeer has the golf cleat components, a threaded receptacle that is glued inside the sole and the cleats which are then screwed in when the shoe is finished.

One thought is to add a midsole to your shoe, otherwise the cleats will push up on your insole after a little bit of wear.

Thanks David, that's what I was looking for, I ordered one from Hale and Co, but I haven't got it yet.

First, I received my tubular nailer from Hale and Co. It's a nice looking tool, only problem is that the nails I want to use are just a little too large in diameter to fit down the hole, so either I have to find different nails or find a way to increase the diameter of the tool.

Second, I'm looking for a good leather splitter, something that I can use to split soling leather thin enough to use as a mid sole. Can anyone point me in the direction of one, I'd be especially grateful for a Canadian connection. What should I expect to pay for one?

If you're using threaded nails...as I think the tubular nailer was designed to use...be aware that some brands have larger heads than others. Also that some are hardened--what you want for making women's high heeled shoes--and some are not.

As for a splitter, I can't give you a Canadian source but I bought a beauty at Melanie Machine in LA and he offered me an Italian job that was motorized and supposedly the slickest thing since sliced bread. At a pretty good price too.

But for a used machine in good repair I would guess $600-$800.00 US is about right.

I was looking for one of them 5 inch splitters some time ago,I was directed to "Landis" of Quebec,They were away on vacation when i called them, than i was offered the use of a 16 inch splitter just down the street at a friend leather shop.
lets us know if you get one.

ISO--a very oily/waxy, "naked" aniline black, struck-through, chrome uppers cow-side leather, maybe 5-5.5 oz. for biker-type/engineer boots. Need a steady supply, not "odd lots". Any ideas?

Shop Talk wrote about that but last I looked their website was still going. I hope they are because I had pretty good service from them.

The last email broadcast I had from Steve was that he was in No. Carolina, I believe, and working as a consultant in leather, and working with tanneries to develope different leathers.

DW, thanks for the tip about the nails, I'll look for some smaller headed ones.

As for splitters, they seem hard to find. The reason I asked about the price is because I have only been able to find machines listed in the $1400-$1600 range. (This includes Melanie Machine)

I'm still waiting to hear from Landis who are on summer holidays.

Turns out Horween has three likely oily leathers leathers. Thanks for the input.

While we're on the subject of Horween leathers, I'm in desparate need of three sides of their Waxed Flesh in Natural.

I had eight pcs. set aside, and now the last three are no longer avilable to me. I won't go into the problem with ya'll.

Now I learn Horween is closing down for the summer, so I have to turn to the "network" to have a chance at meeting my deadline of Sept. 1st.

So I'm hoping one of you folks has three sides in your inventory that you'd sell me, or front me, until Horween is back up. Whatever it takes at this point.
