Well, I do. I've done it that way and it works.
However, since it's primarily for appearance sake, I doubt it makes much if any difference. I dunno, by the time you get done skiving, wetting, shaping, and drying those strips i can have half a dozen horseshoe 'rands' made and mounted. For me anyway...and YMMV...even though I think a case could be made that horseshoe shaped cutouts are structurally superior, it's just less bother.
