2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM)

#1 Post by das »

The Honourable Cordwainers' Company
is pleased to announce the
34th Annual General Meeting
in cooperation with
The Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, Lancaster, PA
October 26-28 2018

We are looking forward to a great program at this year’s Thirty-fourth Annual General Meeting of the Honourable Cordwainers' Company, in cooperation with The Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum is a 100-acre, open-air, living history museum in the heart of Lancaster County. Started in the 1920's by Henry K. and George D. Landis, the museum collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets two centuries of PA German life (from 1740-1940) in an authentic crossroads village comprised of 26 historic structures and the nation's largest collection of Pennsylvania German artifacts. Landis Valley is a nationally significant museum that incorporates costumed interpreters, animals, Pennsylvania German varieties of heirloom plants, and its massive collection in its ongoing mission to promote education, conduct ongoing research and host events for the benefit and enjoyment of visitors and the local community.
http://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/

As a “class-reunion” of sorts for charter members, this lovely site nestled in rural Lancaster County was the site of the first HCC AGM in 1985. The county is also the “Antiques Capitol” of America, great tool-hunting and general antiquing abounds. It’s the heart of the Amish Country and home of fine country cooking.

The LVV&F Museum holds a vast collection of shoemaking tools. Our meeting will include a guided tour of the Collections Gallery (off limits to the public) where thousands of items are displayed and stored. We will have a behind the scenes tour focusing on shoemaking tools and supplies with one of the museum’s collections specialists.

Call For Papers—Those who wish to present an illustrated talk (Power Point), workshop, or hands-on demonstration are asked to contact Al Saguto dasaguto@widomaker.com This year’s theme will be ‘Shoes: Pacemakers of Progress’—nothing rigid, just a casual nudge—presentations should explore changes over time in shoe fashions, and shoemaking techniques, how we got to where we are today, and exactly where are we today?

HOTEL AND TRAVEL
Numerous nearby airports include: Lancaster Airport (LNS / KLNS) Harrisburg International Airport
(MDT / KMDT), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL / KPHL)

Group Hotel information will be coming soon, watch http://thehcc.org for more details.

October 26-28 2018

We are looking forward to a great program at this year’s Thirty-fourth Annual General Meeting of the Honourable Cordwainers’ Company, in cooperation with The Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

SCHEDULED SPEAKERS TO DATE
Visit the HCC website at thehcc.org for updates at http://thehcc.org/
In addition to our presentations, we will also enjoy a guided tour of the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s Collections Gallery for an up-close view of their extensive collection of shoemaking tools.

John Bailey, Leather Craftsman, Boot and Sandal Maker
“Restoring an 18th Century Bellows”

Historic Cold Spring Village in Cape May, NJ commissioned me to restore their blacksmith bellows. I had replaced the rotted leather on it some 30 years ago. They had replaced my old leather with canvas that soon began ripping away from the wood. This presentation features photos before, during and after the project and discussion of how I solved the many problems of a project of that size.

Anne Marika Verploegh Chassé, Maker of Boots and Shoes – Owner “STIEFELwerk NYC”
Adjunct Faculty, Rhode Island School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology NYC
Artist, Curious Explorer
“Well Shod in Red

Musings on the color Red in foot-wear through history. I often wondered about the fascination with Red in shoes and boots – this is my small journey to get to the bottom of it all.

Hands-on demonstration:
“Draping”

A short demo on draping the last with canvas. I have learned with many different makers over the course of my long “apprenticeship”– my patternmaking is a culmination of several patternmaking methods. This draping method is quick and reliable.

Bruce Graham, Owner, Gossville Shoes
“Modern to Historical: When Progress is a Step Backward”

The story of my journey, from my start in the trade making modern shoes, to my progression/regression to making reenactor footwear, discussing techniques, decisions and rationale.

Sharon Kudrle, Shoemaker
“The Contents of a Newbury Massachusetts Shoe and Horse Tack shop 1790-1890”

Presenting a look through the eyeglass lenses of early shoemakers via the contents of their shop.

Edward Maeder, Costume & Textile Consultant, former Curator of Costumes and Textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum
“A Walk through the World of Shoes: From Davy Crocket to Randy Athletes”

We all have a lifelong and intimate relationship with our shoes. This is about my personal journey, an unexpected path that included everything from Post-Toasties moccasins to the world of Ferragamo and then on to trademark litigation. From Los Angeles to Europe and beyond, I will share some of these shoe stories and revealing images.

Shaun Pekar, Independent Historical Shoemaker and Research, Principal Shoemaker at S. Pekar, Shoe and Accoutrement Maker
“Hand Sewn Welts and Whip Stitched Rands”

Hands-on demonstration:
In this interactive demonstration, Cordwainer Shaun Pekar will demonstrate some of the methods utilized in the construction of men’s footwear from the third quarter of the 18th century, while discussing the evolution and variations of these techniques. Questions and discussion are highly encouraged.

Brett Walker, Journeyman Boot- & Shoe-Maker, Proprietor, Bt.W. & Co.
“The Gentle Art & Its Mysterie: Lore, Legend, and Little-Known Legit Facts of Shoemaking”

The shoemaking trade is one of the richest trades - if not the richest trade - in the way of folklore, stories humorous and tragic, legends, patron saints, illustrious practitioners, oddly-named tools and terms, and just plain mysteries. Some of these are lost to our knowledge, others have varying degrees of factuality, and many are just plain puzzling. Brett Walker will provide a "Whitman's Sampler" of some of his favorites, with explanations and applications to the actual historical practice of the trade.

The guild's toast for our annual "Feasting & Drinking", for those who cannot attend tomorrow night. Adapted from The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers' toast, our mother-guild, from 'The Antiquary' (London) 1871:

The Honourable Cordwainers Company, root and branch, and may they continue in unanimity and harmony forever.

A grand time was had by all at our 34th Annual General Meeting at Landis Valley Museum 10/26-28. It poured rain most of the time, but we all stayed warm and dry.

The Guild's "Feasting & Drinking" at Black Angus chophouse, Friday night:

The "Feasting & Drinking" was followed by the tool swap back at the hotel. Only Sunday did we learn of an HCC member, locally, who has two foot lockers full of more tools! Hope to see those come out next year.

And what more suitable venue than the Guild meeting to sign-off on a new apprentice's 5-year "indenture" to a master, in the company of such stalwart witnesses?

Two more from '18 AGM. The Saturday night dinner at Union Barrel Works (we picked-up more folks Sat.!). The erstwhile apprentice, master, with indenture-signing witness looking on.
