Many finishing tools (collices) used on the edge of an outsole or around the heel seat have handles that are shaped to very nearly force you to push them with your right hand. The handle being cut at an angle or with a radius to accommodate your thumb.

Almost all the London makers' tools that I've run across had this feature and some( but not all) the US tools, did as well.

Obviously you can use a Star welt knife any way you want and with either hand. But once you get used to wheeling the heel seat and or burnishing the waist (every tool I've seen is a right handed push), it seems second nature to push the Star welt knife (all welt knives) with the right hand.

Thanks. I use it the "normal" way, and get good results--just wondering if anyone else thought it would be easier to use backwards.

Here are three right handed finishing tools,edge/sole scraper with adjustable blade fasten by the bolt,it works very well even for a left hand shoe maker, although i have to pull toward me like i do it with knife but much safer.
The channel cutter on the right also have an adjustable blade,but fully for right hand,i use the bottom end of the tool as a groover to scrap some leather from the channel to embed the thread.
The safety welt knife is my recent tool,i use it for trimming heel seats. Thank heaven a shoe maker can do all the above and more with a sharp straight knife.

Yes, and thank you. I suspect that's exactly what was intended with the creation of this sub-forum. I tried to post a weekly summary for a while when the thread began, but I was the only one so, after a while I sort moved on to other issues.
