News and announcements

This off topic area is a place where, while you are visiting the Crispin Colloquy, you can talk about beer, whiskey, kilts, the latest WWII re-enactment, BBQ, grandsons, shoes in the media, and even the odd meandering essay on "why we make shoes."

Here is a video a French tv team made recently from our village. You will see a glimpse from my place.

Master violin maker Marco Coppiardi in his Boston studio.

I found this video of master violin maker Marco Coppiardi last night. I always enjoy watching a master craftsman, of any discipline, working at their craft.

A lot of the sentiments expressed by Master Coppiardi are echoed here.

Enjoy.

Janne,

Well, that place was a piece of heaven in summer, but it is still nice in winter. Yaya and me just loved to see that place again! Thanks for posting!

Janne,
I'd have a hard time leaving Hara, I think. My French is limited, but I gather it was a news piece on how the small Swedish village is practically self-sustaining---meaning business is conducted quite frequently between households?

Jeff,
yes, you got it right! They where also interested to see how a day in a small village in Sweden could look like during winter and Christmas time.

Al,
we are moving because my wife's job will close this spring. She is working at an government institute, in the nearby city of Östersund, which will be relocated to Stockholm.

Hara looks and is a paradise but unfortunately one can not live by a beautiful scenery only, that said we need her wages. It will be sad to leave this but if you have to live in a big city Stockholm is a good one.

ps Could you please send my your address I got the stuff from Wilma some days ago.

Janne,
Isn't there a saying that every good shoe or bootmaker has a spouse that works in town?

I had to send mine off to the Army just so I could buy better leathers. Image

I am going to break all protocols and wish myself a Happy Birthday today.

When I was in my mid twenties, it was popular to say that no one over the age of thirty could be trusted. Being a credulous and trusting sort and believing such popular nostrums, I have, over the intervening years often suspected my own motives for having lived so long.

At 64 I'm just glad to have been around long enough to get to do what I've done and know who I've come to know.

It is significant in that I am now entitled to collect Social Security.

But I think I'll hold off for another year....if the guv'mint don't collapse and the crick don't rise, I should be able to make shoes for my own pleasure and no one else's. Of course, I've always done that to one degree or the other, but even though I will take orders I won't need to. It will be a liberating moment, I think.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEE-DUBB!!

I don't know, you might want to try to get back some of your payments to SS. It don't look good to me! But let's not get into politics.

Wishing you the very best today, and many more days to come!
I love ya!

Take care, Jake

Thanks guys! I appreciate it. Randee's out of town so I've been batching it for the last week. She's due back this evening...but the rest of the day it's just me and the dog.

Fred, Interesting that you are in Santa Fe. I wish I had known that 7-8 years ago. I used be be on the board of directors of a venture capital firm that had its front office in Santa Fe. I had to fly down there 2-3 times a year for several days.

I used to really enjoy the Buckaroo Ball. We went four times I think.

Happy Birthday DW!

I'm more than happy to join the throng of well wishers.

It's an interesting thing, isn't it, to be home alone for ones Bday?
Contemplation has a whole different feel to it, I think.

Continue to congratulate yourself, I'll feel better about doing the same myself in April when I turn 60.

Ain't life Grand!?

Best Wishes,
Paul

Happy, happy Birthday.

I have a friend who celebrates their birthday for a month - you might want to consider that because you deserve it for all the contributions you make to others!

Warmest wishes, Tom

DW,

Happy birthday my friend!

Personally, I need to deal with customers. They hold my feet to the fire for quality and comfort. As a master, you don't need to run this gauntlet if you don't want to.

Cheers and a lovely single malt Scotch - on me!

DW,

Happy Birthday!

I will be celebrating 46 (sort of a dyslexic 64) this Friday. I like Rick's idea. Lets split the difference and have a single malt together, long distance, Wednesday night Image

Being aquarian's do we have to put water in the scotch?

All,

I am just a little embarrassed...as mentioned, Randee was out of town and I guess I was feeling a little at loose ends so I posted the announcement about my birthday.,

I didn't expect you all to throw me a party!!

Thank you very much. I am honoured and touched.

Paul,

Yes, being alone on your birthday is strange...what's the line? Image"one is the loneliest number"Image

Al,

ImageImageImageImage
10964.gif

I'm trying...as you so "kindly" Image pointed out at AGM couple years back. Now I get up in the morning and hysterically slather rogaine on the point of my head.

Thomas,

I might be able to pull that one off...for an extra hour or two.

Rick,

Funny but sad story...I got a gift card from my daughter for Christmas to buy exotic groceries at Newport market. One thing and another and I didn't get around to it until last night (Randee got in about five). Went in and picked out a nice dry aged rib-eye ($29.99 a lb.) and some fancy cheese, etc. for a birthday celebration. Was going to pour a round of Quarter Cask as part of the festivities. Got up to the counter and their computer was down and I could even cash out the gift card.
10965.gif
[sigh]

Terry,

Good idea! There's always another opportunity.

Georgene,

I never thought of the time spent with any of my students as harrowing. I'm naturally a curmudgeon but you never know what's eating someone. They may be grumpy because they have a toothache or hemorrhoids or their dog ran away...

Thanks again everyone. What a blessing you all are.
