Does anyone know where I can get canvas replacement exhaust bags for the exhaust system for my Landis 400 finishing machine? Or can I use paper filter bags?

So...Thornton details using gum tragecanth for bottom finishing. Anyone actually using it and have any tips?

Its me again. And I have acquired another machine. This one is a Singer 29K56 (long arm) patcher. It was made at Kilbowie in about 1928 and has not been cleaned since :-)

Anyone know where I can find shuttle timing information on this machine ? It does not have the two rack / two pinion system of our short arm (29K58) machine, but a 3 pinion / 1 rack set-up.

I am a bit unhappy with silver pens I recently ordered - they are ball-point pens and create a thick line. I cut to one side of the line, but I was wondering what else people use for patterning leather?

Are some silver pens more fine than others?

Not only are some silver pens finer points than others, the ink in some silver pens may or may not be removable on some leathers--even silver pens touted as being for leather and removable.

A word to the wise.

Matt Foster of Maverick Leather in Penngrove CA carries Horween leathers - some browns/blacks in chromexcel and waxed flesh. He also has their Latigo style, as well as others which I cannot remember. Make sure your knives are sharp, it's thick.

I tried calling him earlier today and the number and website were both down or unavailable, so I am not sure what's going on.

Thanks Nick!

But I am in Hong Kong, so a website and email address will be better than phone numbers.
Will try to contact them anyway.

I am just curious why you would not just contact Horween leather in Chicago directly? Geri

Sorry, Pals, for I didn't tell you guys ahead.

I've contact Horween few years ago.
They are slow for a small oversea order. From request to deliver, almost ONE YEAR!
Finally I got 2 pcs of Shell Cordovan, but need to thru a Mainland China agent with commission, and I also find out the price was more than DOUBLE the normal price that I found out later in States. It didn't include shipping, since they delivered (who is Nick IIRC) it personally when he via HK to a China trade show.

BTW, I bought few Cordovan at Brettuns Village last week, they are on sale, just USD90/pc, a great price I think. Go to check it out if you're interested.

Alexander,

Well, since your original question was about chromexcel, I would note that Ilcea

*ILCEA - S.P.A.
205/1, VIA SANSOVINO 10151
TORINO (TORINO)
ITALY
website

produces a line called horse-lux that is virtually identical to chromexcel (at least visually and tactilely)

You might have better luck ordering...and getting delivery...from Italy.

Well, Charles Hardtke carries the horse-lux...for now. They seem reluctant to carry Ilcea products. Like a lot of US leather suppliers, they simply don't perceive a demand for top quality leather among American shoe/bootmakers.

Of course the fact that no one want to offer high quality leathers only means that we are not exposed to it and have no chance to evaluate it..or create a demand.

That said, prices per sq.ft. are bound to be higher than domestic leathers due to shipping, duties and VATs.

Baker insole is another good example...best quality insole shoulders...world-wide, bar none...better than average outsole bends. But no one carries it here in the States.

It occurs to me though that there is a big leather show in Hong Kong. (isn't there?) My old teacher used to gather several thousand dollars every year and go to the big leather shows that used to be held here in the states (back in the day...last century, last age). He'd spend every last cent and essentially buy for the year.

If I lived in HK that's what I think I'd do.

Yes, I think the show still held at Hong Kong. I will try to go next year.
However, many leather and shoe related show has been moved to China, since most if not all "leather related factories" moved to China already.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestion, DW.

Oops, I made a mistake, the guy who bought me the Shell was not Nick, who was John Culliton, the Director of the Global Sales

I am looking for some really light veg tan lining, like what you see used on wallet pockets (less than 1oz).

I tried Garlin-Neumann, but they didn't have anything to fit the bill.

Anyone have a source?

Thanks,

John

John, there is a leather store here in san francisco that has pigskin in different colors...though you will have to ask if it's veg tanned.

I would like to do some broguing, but do not have a good idea of sizes to get. Can someone provide me with hole dimensions/diameters for the 1-large + 2-small holed pattern commonly seen?

I suppose a third and fourth size would be for toe-cap patterns, like Rick Roman has shown on the site before.

I am talking with Hienrich from http://www.wwr-gmbh.de/ and need to give him sizes.

These would be for men's dress shoes.

Nick,

I will answer the question here in case some one else might be interested in buying some of these well made hole punches.

I will say size 0 or 1 will be good for the small holes and for the big hole i am not sure but will guess size 17 or 18, I use a different made punch for the big one.
