To those attending the 2011 AGM (and those who are not) – I’m looking at the pictures and sulking. I see pic’s of Ken, Al, Dick, Jenny, John, Frank, Dan, Paige and Lisa and the Frommers, along with other whose names I’ve forgotten or haven’t met, not to mention those who might not be present, and lamenting the fact that I must wait another year before seeing them/you again. Would that circumstances (finances) were different! Greetings, friends.
Al and DW, why don’t you email me some of that good Scotch! (Great knees, by the way). Ken, same with the plumb cognac (Sliva-whatzit) with monkey bottle and the fez! Dan, we were going to try to get to M’burry during the weeks prior to the AGM, but circumstances didn’t allow. Paige, I was looking forward to seeing some of your latest creations – you have pretty darned good taste!
Anyway, I miss you all! Hope it was a great meeting!

Bruce and Penny

In the 'afterglow" of the AGM...while the excitement and pleasure lingers...I would like to take this opportunity to offer especial thanks to those who attended and made the 26th AGM such a success.

We had over 60 people who registered and/or attended the meeting. Every single one of you contributed to the...can I say "joyous?"...atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie. Thank you for coming.

Thanks to all the presentors.

To Bill Tippitt for sharing his knowedge of the lastmaking trade.

Thanks to Marlietta Schock not only for a fine presentation with some interesting new ideas, but for yoeman service on such short notice.

Thanks to Brett Walker for a well researched and fascinating paper on 18th century footwear.

Thanks to Bob Boyd and the High Desert Museum for a wonderful exposition of historical boots and objects and his talk about the High Desert Buckaroo.

Thanks to Lisa Sorrel for sharing her insights into crimping alligator for full wellingtons. I still don't know how she does it--it's genius.

Thanks to Georgene McKim who kept us all enthralled with her practical and inspired approach to making women's shoes. It makes me suspect that she invented the contemporary woman's shoe...or someone like her.

And thanks to Frank Jones who filled a hole in our schedule so well and so interestingly that I kept wondering if ther ought to be milk and cookies afterwards.

Thanks to Miriam Saguto, who always seems to be there with a soothing word and a solution for intractable problems even if it means she has to burn the midnight oil.

Thanks to Larry Waller for advice and suggestions.

And especial thanks to Randee Frommer who has worked beside me and with me and for all of us since January; who scrubbed and cooked (most of Sunday lunch) and contributed ideas; who was always there when I needed a little propping up and without whom none of this could have happened.

Thank you to those who I may have forgotten--my head is so full it will surely burst and I have not processed it all.

Thank you everyone.

As I said, my head is still spinning and I did forget one person who I really wanted to single out:

Thanks...big thanks...to Rick Roman...who spent much of his time at the AGM taking photos and taping the presentations instead of simply enjoying himself and visiting with friends.

My apologies for that omission, Rick...can you push my chair closer to the window, I'd like to sit in the sun awhile.

Surely there are more photos out there!?

I didn't get any photos this year...was too busy running for coffee. I was depending on other folks for photos.

I know I saw half a dozen other cameras going off at one time or the other.

Please, post!

I forgot to mention a few of these were panoramic to get more view, but a little distorted.

Now maybe one of the firehouse training room, the meeting was held at a fire station, during a break.

And we can't forget that we had the opportunity to look at boots supplied by Bob Boyd from High Desert Museum.

Moving onto Sunday.

At one point many people were gathering at DW's place.

Al gave an interesting demo.

Here DW was helping him get dressed in a tailored apron of DW's....quite fancy!
14047.jpg

This next picture is of Al waiting while DW gets supplies. But take a close look at what he is sitting on. DW's custom shoe bench, with no hardware (nails, screws, etc) holding it together, is quite a sight. Al of course joked about putting the water bottle next to the bench, on the bench to put the benches first "ring" into the finish.
14048.jpg

Now it was not real obvious in the demo, but Al used these blacksmith made nails to make sure things were kept authentic.

Rick showed us his high tech, homemade, last digitizing tool.

With plenty of free time it would be wonderful to digitize all those old lasts people have laying around to have an old last library for the future.

Just a few minutes talking with Frank made me realize how much different older lasts are from today's machine driven designs and how much will be lost to the future when those designs go away.

Unfortunately I did not work to get the best angle on some of these pictures.

For now I will end this sequence with a picture of DW "wrapping it up" Image in his demo of shrink wrapping a show before lasting.

I will look through my other pictures for more.

Great photos Terry!

Thanks for posting these.

Keep them coming! I know there's a lot more out there. We owe it to Janne Melkerssohn and and Norm Walzer and Jake Dobbins, if nothing else. (The airlines cancelled Jake's flight)--these are their only consolation.

Jake,

I'll say we missed you! I kept looking around expecting to spot you but...no-o-o.

Worse yet I had to pour whisky back into the bottle!

And when Al went for the joyride in some other guy's Fairlane...well, all I got to say is he could've used someone riding shotgun.

Yeah... What DeeDub said. That ol' redneck boy was not too happy I hot-wired his Fairlane, and you know how useless DW is in a fist-fight. You coulda head-butted him--me I had to just run Image

Yeah, I suppose, eh?

If Jake had head-butted me, I would have fallen right in front of the irate red-neck and he would have tripped over me and you and Jake would have got off scot free, probably with my flask in hand.

It's not enough I have to share my kilt with you...and uncounted "others" (moth balls won't work in this instance)...I got to be the "fall guy" for the "Fairlane Caper," too??!!

It's "ageism," that's what it is.

Besides my hands are delicate...I never figured I needed to get into a fist-fight when I had a Image

Lordie-mercy, sounds like you fellers had a time. Listen, I wish I could have been there. It's been a loooong time since I've been as mad as I was last Thursday. NEVER will I fly again!! NEVER!

Yeah Larry, I remember when we ate at that Mexican restaurant in Oklahoma City. On the way back, I thought I was gonna have a wreck! I should have pulled over and stopped. But don't worry, we'll have some more good times.

Dee-Dubb, don't know how much I could have helped. I guess my head is still pretty hard, if nothing else! Please give Randee a big hug for me.

I missed everyone, but I did get some quality time in with my kids. We went fishing and hiking. Some consolation, if nothing else.

Once again, I hope everyone had a safe trip back home.
