What a fantastic weekend we had at the AGM at Walrus Shoe & Leather Co. in Delavan, Wisconsin. Besides the joy of getting together with old friends we also had the opportunity to meet many new ones.
Here we all are with thanks to Dale Sorrell for taking the picture (84 times
)
Special thanks to the speakers. The level of the presentations was outstanding. Dick Anderson showed hands on tool sharpening and was nice enough to bring a large supply of the gimping attachments.
Lisa Sorrell was extremely generous in sharing with us the formula to her business success. Not to mention the boots she and Dale showed off, true works of wearable art.
Bill Harris opening our eyes to the possibility of using contoured wood bottoms matched to the last.
David Ulan sharing his years of experience in finding the correct adhesive for the job. Good ideas to try back home.
Of course we can not forget the virtual visit of author Tim Skyrme. It was to bad that the technology let us down and did not bring the normal clear connection. The surprise was no less! Thank to Larry and Tim for coordinating across 16, (give or take a few) time zones.
And last but certainly not least Georgene McKim with an in depth analysis of her journey to become a shoemaker.
Of course there was the feasting at only the best of the local establishments, carefully selected by Larry and Cindy.
We can not thank Larry, Cindy and Crispin Waller enough for their generosity and hospitality. After having all off us decent on the farm it will take Larry months to get the place organized
In short it was a fantastic weekend of meeting new friends, sharing tips and techniques, learning and feasting. What more can we ask for. Thanks to all who made this such a success. Only 362 days to the next AGM but who's counting?

I want to second the thanks to Larry et al. for hosting all of us.
Thanks to all the presenters, both scheduled and unscheduled. It was a lot of things to think about and I have already used the advice from Frank on sewing smoother curves.
Hopefully we'll all be there next year as well.

I want to say this before I get too caught up in the work on the bench.
Larry, Cindy and Crispin and all,
WHat a great weekend! And your family set the tone. Since we left our church group now some 20 years ago, my wife and I have not been joiners. It happens to alot of us. And unfortunatly, it can leave scars.
However you guys made such a huge welcome impression, that we were not the only ones who found it easy to join in. It was wonderful not to feel judged or to be judgemental of others all weekend. The way you greeted us and validated each throughout the weekend, was such a great example of acceptance. The world would truly be a better place if we all were like that, all the time.
Earlier this morning, I had called my wife at work to thank her for being such good companion this weekend (she like's it when I do that kinda stuff), and she said it was easy because of you folks.
In fact each of you who attended the AGM, really appeared to opened up your hearts to one another. And I know we all had a wonderful time because of it. It was good to be with all of you.
Thanks soo much to those who put themselves on the line and did a presentation. Even those not on the schedule who were willing to share; like Sharlott demonstrating how to do a 'taped' mean form with cloth, and Jenny with her helpful endorsement of an exercise glove, and Dan with his one piece oxford pattern with the big idea he had to get what he wanted (Dan, Lisa and I looked at each other with a knowing wink as soon as you started). I hope I'm not forgetting anyone, but good stuff from all of you. Thank you.
And certainly, lets not forget Al and Miriam who do soo much for us behind the scenes all year long. Thank you two too!
Tim, it was a good time trying to make you out in pixels. Larry really put alot of effort to bring you to us. I know it was appreciated by all of us.

AMEN! to that.
Sounds like I missed a lot on Sunday as I had to leave to go to O'Hare. Next year I'll have to stick around for the "unofficial" part of the presentations. Making it home in time to see the Red Sox sweep the world series does not even make up for missing out on some very informative sessions and the opportunity to spend more time with my Cordwainer friends.
As next year's St. Crispin day is on Saturday it will likely be a very special gathering, I'm counting the days.
Anyone willing to share the story of Al's kilt now that the picture is out in the open or should we all just try to forget that ever happened

It was a dark and stormy night, except that it wasn't stormy. The band of revellers had recently returned from their - well, revelling. Their stomachs were full and their spirits were high. Someone had touched off the bonfire in the back yard and it was starting to gather attention. There was a hint of mischief in the air and some of the revellers had their heads together planning some, with the assistance of The Monkey. He certainly got around that night!
MacGregor arrived, brandishing his sword, followed by his three accomplices. The one carrying the monkey was draped about with ceremonial gold ropes and wore a fez. He was either a Persian or a Shriner. Someone else showed up with a leather helmet and started playing the conga drums.
A "Wisconson Haggis" was produced and ceremoniously marched around to the sound of vocal bagpipes played poorly. MacGregor halted the processional and assumed the persona of Robbie Burns as he addressed the Haggis. The address was harsh sounding and gutteral and sounded quite fierce. Several revellers were so alarmed that at least one of them spent a good deal of time on the ground, and may have actually been unconscious at one point. She was given a pillow and blanket, and seemed comforted.
MacGregor drew his sword during the address and stabbed the Haggis through the heart, killing it, then threw it on the fire. The vocal bagpipes had ceased by this time, and the drum had taken over the task of filling the air, mixing with the smoke from the fire. The monkey was still causing mischief, and the night was still relatively young.
There were unconfirmed rumors the next day that, at one point, the party was interrupted by polar bears - however, this writer was not present for this, so another needs to take up the tale from here.

I would like to add my thanks and appreciation for a fantastic weekend in Delavan. Now I know why I budget for that massive membership fee of $20 each year 
!

Robert and I drove to O’Hare together and as he said we apparently missed some interesting items. However, I would like to just highlight one “unofficial part of the presentations” before we left, which really demonstrated the spirit of the weekend.

It was fun weekend! I'd been traveling quite a bit in the last several months and had begun to feel tired at the thought of another trip. However, it was MUCH more than just another weekend of traveling. I learned so much and met so many nice people--I was honored to be welcomed into such an interesting and fun group. The annual HCC meeting will definitely be added to my list of "must do" activities.

It was great to be a part of the meeting, even if slightly disembodied. Sorry it wasn't clearer but Larry and I only got the kinks worked out at 4 in the morning before the event and it was all a bit hit and miss, but mostly hit.
It sounded from my end as though the initial impact was what was required.
Even if not clear, it was fun to be part of something new and different.

I also would like to send my appreciation to Larry, Cindy and Crispin for hosting the AGM. I'm only two hours away and I don't get to see you nearly enough.
It was good to see people I met a few years ago and to meet new ones, as well. I was a little under the weather, so I apologize for not being as active as I wanted to be. As always, it was inspiring to be around other shoe people- especially since I'm not working on shoes nearly as much as I would like to be.
I am looking forward to the next meeting and those in-between.

He was fussing with them for several hours at the AGM trying to get them tempered and sharpened. They seemed to work OK buy he was not happy with them. He felt they should be sharpened from the inside edge instead of the outside. I agree, this will result in a cleaner cut but I have one of the prototypes I'm going to try asap.

The AGM was a great weekend of caring and sharing. Here are a few more pictures of the "seasoned" helping those with questions within the nurturing environment created by the Waller's. Slight goof up with captions and a couple of missing pictures. Here's Bill Harris and Dick's Gimping trial. Larry was giving new member Zoe Rios pointers on the Naumkeg as Bruce looked on and Zoe tried here hand at the finisher.

Mirm and I just wanted to add our thanks to everyone who attended this year's AGM, and especially to our gracious hosts Larry, Cindy and Crispin! Coming home is a bit like leaving Brigadoon.
