Hi Folks,

I'm looking at coming to the gathering this year. And I'm wondering if anyone would be intersted in coordinating a car pool to the "gathering". I'm looking at getting into Chicago about 3pm, or so.

No tickets yet so maybe there's flexibility on the time.

Contact me privatly if you're interested.

All

Just following up the excellent idea from Paul Krause.

I will be flying into Chicago O’Hare on American 1025 from Newark arriving at 21.43 on Friday 21st October, picking up a Hertz car and driving up to Delavan to arrive there around midnight.

Travelling home from O’Hare on American 54 leaving at 18.10 on Sunday 23rd.

If those arrangements and times are useful to anybody else, there are three seats available in the car both ways - gratis. Please email me privately on the address below to arrive here by Sunday 16th at the latest.

I want to thank everyone for all the kind words about my presentation. It's easy to talk about something you love. I figured when I was told I had an extra hour that guys would regret it. If I had been asked to speak about selling software to large corporations we would have broken for lunch much sooner. A special thanks to Larry for asking me in the first place and to Larry, Cindy, and all those who helped make the weekend possible, we can't thank you enough for your efforts.

Once I get caught up I'll be revamping my website to focus on the custom last business, including adding a digital catalog of the lasts in my library. I'm also going to add a page where I'll periodically just ramble on. My first entry to that page will be the story of how on my trip home, the crack security TSA force at O'Hare thwarted what surely could have been a major terrorist attack by forcing me to check a rare and valuable last stick fitted with a Krippendorf Finder. I explained to Officer Obie that the only thing I could accomplish with this "weapon" was to show that the insteps on his feet did not match the insteps on his shoes, but that didn't matter and after much "discussion" I was escorted back to the ticket counter to have my "weapon" properly shoved into a cardboard box and sent on its merry way. Father and baby both arrived safely so the story does have a happy ending.

Bill

PS - Happy St. Crispin's Day everyone. All I got was a ROCK(port).

PS2 - I tried to post this on the thread about the AGM on the HCC Bulletin Board but got a message that I was not authorized. One little incident at an airport and the blacklisting begins......
Just kidding. I know I'm not officially registered as a member of the HCC yet but the check is literally in the mail.

Bill,

I wish as as hard (and as in vain) as possible that I could have been there. Damn...it's hard getting old and turning into a old fuddy-duddy, stay-at-home. I wish...well I wish we could fold the space-time continuum and I could step out my door and into Larry's shop. But, if wishes were horses, beggers would ride.

You couldn't post in the HCC Bulletin Board because that area is reserved for board members adn other high muckety-mucks at HQ. I only get to go there myself because I sweep up at night. Where you did post (here) was just fine.

Happy St. Crispin's Day...I got lumps of black coad.

I'll add to the voices of what a rewarding weekend it was. I've mentioned before my background in shoe repair and being as self-taught as one can be in this information-filled age we live in. The best part for me was validation. No academy awards, of course, but I felt like Sally Fields, "you love me, you really, reallly love me".

What a warm greeting from Larry, with his "walrus hugs", and Dan, who I'd met briefly many years ago. It was also great to visit with Larry Momeyer and his wife, who share my background of shoe repair.

I was really struck by the other leather trades that were represented. Dan mentioned Ken Holmstrom who makes fantastic Leather Bottles and there was also John Roberts who makes Leather Buckets. Who'd a-thought!?

Bills presentation was of real value right away, and Andy Caire's presentaion, Colors to Dye For, 18th Century Shoes, was informative too. Al Zerobnic's video on shoe making sure was a delicious tid-bit.

The enthusiasm of Erik Geer Wilcox and his product development process, and Georgene McKim, just getting her stuff together to go into buisness in the LA area, was really infectious.

I'd could go on about all the great people I met, and new friends I made, but suffice it to say, I came back to the studio with renewed juices to create.

I had been putting off attending because of time and money, both valid reasons in their own. But what I brought back was way more valuable than the interest I'll pay on the darn charge card.

I can't wait for next year, my comittment is to join the Polar Bear Club. And I have to say, the dinner entertainment still brings a tear to my eye when I think of the song, My Work. Thank you Larry for booking Rich.

What a great weekend! My Thanks to all. And Cindy, I never even noticed your feet. I was too struck by your smile.

21st ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
THE HCC AGM 2006

Come to the ‘Burg for our Shoemaker’s Meeting!
All are welcome to attend our 21st HCC AGM for 2006 in lovely Williamsburg, Virginia. To be held on October 27-29 2006, this year's AGM promises to be a wonderful follow-up to the excellent beginning of our 20th year at the Walrus Shoe and Leather Co. in Delavan, Wisconsin last October.

This year’s meeting will take place at the Bruton Heights Educational Center of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation – close to the hotel and, for spouses, many local attractions and sites. Veteran and charter members – and new members – are all welcome to attend this milestone guild anniversary gathering (our second in two years!)

A Call for Papers: The best part of our meetings is learning from each other. Come and share your research, skills or shop-styles with your fellow shoemakers. Anyone interested in giving a presentation, lecture, hands-on workshop or fireside chat is encouraged – please email dsaguto@cwf.org to let us know what equipment you might need and we’ll put you on the schedule. And, if you can’t attend, you can still give a presentation – just send us your DVD or VHS tape and we’ll include it in the weekend presentations.

HOTEL & TRAVEL
Reservations are available at the Best Western Patrick Henry Inn, directly adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg. There is a block of 15 rooms available, so call today to make your reservation!
Best Western Patrick Henry Inn
1-800-446-9228
Rate is $59/night ++taxes, double occupancy
Ask for the Cordwainers' Company group reservation.

Nearest airports are Newport News International and Richmond International. Groome Transportation provides a fee based shuttle service for both, and Enterprise Car Rental has offices at both airports and in Williamsburg.

SPEAKERS & HIGHLIGHTS
This year’s speakers will feature Val Povinelli, Shoemaker for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, on Archaeological Footwear of Old Philadelphia and Colonial Williamsburg: An Overview, and a special presentation by Colonial Williamsburg’s Harness Shop featuring Saddler Jim Kladder. Saddler Jay Howlett has offered a talk on 18th century leather breeches. In addition, we will have a special tour of the Jamestown Archaearium (www.apva.org/jr.html) on Sunday, Home of America’s first Cordwainers, the “Jamestown Rediscovery” archaeological dig has recently unearthed some of our oldest shoes.

There is plenty of space to display your work, so bring your “prizework” or tools to show, trade or swap, and anything else you’d like to share with your fellow shoemakers and leather trades enthusiasts. If want to share your prizework from a distance, mail it (insured) to HCC, c/o 5 Foxcroft Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Several members have shared from afar in recent years – it’s a great chance for others to see your work – and everything is returned promptly after the meeting.

More speakers are always needed, so please notify Al Saguto (dasaguto@cwf.org) if you would like to share a presentation or workshop. Slide and overhead capacity are available, as are DVD and VCR.

FRIDAY
We will meet in the lobby of the hotel between 3-5pm for registration ($20) and your itinerary of the weekend’s events. Then it’s off at 6pm for relaxation, fellowship and dinner at a local bistro. If you are planning to attend, or have any questions, please email mcsaguto@aol.com so that we can plan for the weekend meals (thanks).

SATURDAY
Our annual business meeting will start the day at the nearby Bruton Heights Educational Center – located within 1 mile of the hotel. Donuts and coffee will get us started and ready for our business meeting in the morning. Lunch is followed by our workshops and presentations on shoemaking and leather trades – remember, we need more speakers!

SATURDAY EVENING
Our annual “Feasting and Drinking” will take place in a special setting selected just for us. Please bring your favorite period costume – a Guild tradition – and we promise, nobody will look at you funny, after all, it’s the historic triangle. And for you polar bears, we are between two beautiful rivers with low, sandy shores….

SUNDAY
Sunday will begin with a group breakfast at the hotel, followed by our own tour of the Jamestown Archaearium. All of our local historic sites are gearing up for our nation’s 400th anniversary celebration in 2007, so this promises to be a very special tour. Then it’s back to the Bruton Heights Center or the Hotel for more swapping and brain picking, techniques and trade traditions.

I can identify some, but not all (I'll blame my poor memory on the Barge fumes!). If someone else would jump in and list the names, that would be great! Maybe Al can identify everyone??

No. I'm in the front row, a couple people in from the left, blue print top, black sweater over my arm.

Hope others will post some pictures, too. As you can see, there was no shortage of cameras among our group! Image

The photo in the previous test post is of our AGM cohost Al Saguto. Here are some more:

This is Dan Freeman during his presentation of "Lasting with the Hoist Method", specifically on the lasting of women's pumps.

Annual Guild Feasting and Drinking at the Kings's Arms Tavern on Saturday night included the encouragement to wear period dress. Here's Al in Kilts and Joe Toth's wife in some of her reinactment regalia. Correct me if I got that last ID wrong.

Georgene,

Great photos. Thanks for posting them. It's good to see some of these people again although the last shot of Al...in what, for him, is mufti...is a real gem.

In the group photo above...

Front Row, left to right: Lois Momeyer, Jenny, Ken Holmstrom, Nancy & John Bailey, Georgene MacKim, Natalie ?

Middle row, left to right: Glen Leasure, Norm Walzer, Al Saguto, Paul Lurk, Penny Graham

Back row, left to right: Frank Jones, Bill Niemczyk, Larry Momeyer, Dan Freeman, Rob Elfrink, Bruce Graham

Thanks to Al Saguto for the naming of names...

Just by head count alone, not everybody is identified but most are. If anyone can fill in the gaps please do so. Also, there is one very important member...who must have been there?? and is not in any of the photos...our ever faithful purser/treasurer, Miriam Saguto. Was she shying away from having images of her reproduced?

Miriam was tough to catch in a picture. She was always scurring around, getting us seminared, fed and transported, even when the participating establishments threw last minute curve balls. Both Miriam and Al did a great job organizing the AGM. I used to put on trade shows for a living and can attest that Miriam should get a merit badge for applying "band-aids" and essentially herding cats--ah, cordwainers!
