Re: The HCC Bulletin Board

#26 Post by dw »

Over a span of time things change...new people, new ideas come along and the old ideas and techniques tend to get lost and forgotten. One of the main reasons The Crispin Colloquy was created was to preserve the techniques and the skills of boot and shoemaking. To become an archive of techniques and philosophies from many different people in many different parts of the world. The Colloquy has always been intended as a record...and, admittedly, it is a record only made possible by emerging technologies such as the Internet. Nothing of its scope or vision could have been done before. The people who post here, encouraging and advising and just as importantly asking, give of themselves generously and voluntarily. As a result, the Crispin Colloquy may be the most extensive, single source, repository of boot and shoemaking information in the world. And it keeps getting better.

And bigger....

Eventually I am going to have to delete all or most of the messages on the board, and we will have to start over with a fresh slate.. We have already exceeded our "bandwidth" (server space)--or at least, the bandwidth that we are paying for--and although our ISP hosts have been most generous and tolerant, we cannot reasonably expect that to go on indefinitely.

Then too, the vagaries of the internet and the mischief that it is subject to, make the Colloquy particularly vulnerable. I have had to completely restore the forum...**by hand**...at least once, and relocate it several times. "Once burned..." I am always nervous about losing all that has gone before from a power outage, a server crash or a DOS.

At the HCC AGM this past fall, several of us discussed ways to preserve the archive in a more permanent (?) form.To that end, after some months of research and tweaking...

The Honourable Corwainers' Company is proud to present: The Crispin Colloquy--on CD!

For those who are interested, The entire message base of The Crispin Colloquy's "Open Forum", "The Gallery" and the Registry" are now available on a cd in a format that allows offline viewing with a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. There is even a Java based search engine that will allow you to zero in on specific subjects and keywords.

Over the course of time, there may be a series of these cds and they may become as valuable for the aspiring boot or shoemaker as any of the literature extant.

The Honourable Cordwainers' Company will offer these for sale...the proceeds go to support the Guild. For more information, drop me an email.

All,

I want to take a moment to give credit to one of our own who, for literally decades, has worked and given of her time and energy and never sought the limelight. Miriam Saguto has been treasurer of The Honourable Cordwainers' Company for as long as I can remember...possibly since the inception of the Guild. She has done a lot of the hard work...the work nobody wants but which must be done. Thanks are not enough to express our gratitude.

Miriam's Grandmother died recently...and on behalf of The HCC and everyone associated with the Forum, I would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolences. Our prayers go out to you, Miriam. God bless and comfort you.

Hope this is the right topic.

Saw a crawler line on CNN news Tuesday night amidst the war-news around 6:30 PM, that Belleville Shoe Co., one of the last two or three mfgs. of military footwear in the US just got a $110 million boot contract, and they're desperate for workers. No further details.

All,

Well, it's been a big project...maybe 40+ hours solid...but the HCC webpage now has the full Texas FSA photo essay, done in 1939 by photographer Lee Russell, available for your enjoyment.

The URL is http://www.thehcc.org and click on Texas Photos in the left frame. This is a two page essay, mostly photos, and if you are on dial up it may take a few moments to download. But once it does, clicking on any thumbnail will bring up a larger version.

I have re-captioned most of the photos from the perspective of a working bootmaker and invite *constructive* comments in that regard.

This is well worth a look...and closer study often reveals ideas and techniques that are not explicit in the photo. So, enjoy...this is HCC Guild dues at work. Image

All,

Saint Crispin's Day fall on a Monday this year...

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of The Honourable Cordwainers' Company will meet in Delavan, Wisconsin again this year from October 22 (Friday) through October 24 (Sunday).

We once again thank Larry, Cindy, and Crispin Waller for allowing us to invade their shop and home and for their congenial and generous hosting. Larry's shop in Delavan is well located for members coming from both coasts, and presents a comfortable venue for the gathering.

Larry is working on a real treat in the way of a presentation but more on that later. Suffice it to say...make your plans now to attend!! This should be a good one! (aren't they all?)

Thought I would post a few pics from the recent HCC AGM. After I post a pic, everyone chip in to name the faces! Sounds like fun to me......by the way, I forgot I had taken a few pics at registration. Found them yesterday on my camera.
