This is a small reminder: HCC dues run from January to December. Those who haven't paid, need to do so as soon as possible in order to be "in good standing"....and to receive a membership card, roster, and the beaming benedictions of the Membership Coordinator.

The following is a brief synopsis of the on-line brochure of The Honourable Cordwainers' Company. The brochure, and more detailed information, can be found at http://www.thehcc.org:

The HCC is a guild of shoe and bootmakers and allied crafts. The purpose is to preserve the Trade, encourage the sharing of skills and
information among members and promote fellowship.

The guild is affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers--a London based guild that traces its beginnings to the 14th century.

The Guild has members from all over the world--many of them recognized authorities on historical shoemaking techniques and footwear history. There is an annual guild meeting on the weekend closest to St. Crispin's Day October 25.) This last year's meeting was in Colonial Williamsburg (which funds an historically correct colonial era shoemaker's shop). It was a three day event beginning on the 23rd of October and running through the 25th.

The Guild maintains an extensive library of old and rare books, as well as newer works on shoemaking, and photocopies of selected chapters
are available to members for a nominal fee. In addition, tapes and transcriptions of recent papers, videos, and presentations made at the annual convention are also available.

The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter--the Crispin Courier--that serves as a link between members and generally contains interesting
bits of news about the Guild or about the world of bespoke shoemaking, and often serves up shoemaking tips (known as "crans") sent in from various members, as well.

Dues are $20.00 annually, and those joining for the first time, who pay after July have their membership dues pro-rated for all of the next year. This figure (the $20.00 for dues) has not changed for at least ten years. Checks should be made out to "The Honourable Cordwainers' Company" and may be sent to the membership coordinator at:

Membership
The Honourable Cordwainers' Company
616 SW Evergreen
Redmond, OR 97756

Once we receive your check, you will be assigned a membership number and your name will be entered into the database. Other materials--newsletters, rosters, and an official membership card--will arrive from other sources as time goes by.

For further information please contact me at:

This is a small rant cum reminder slash explanation:

Since sometime last year I have been handling all HCC membership inquiries as well as the collection of dues and information about members. I am also sending out brochures to new members and have instituted a membership card. All of this requires timely and up-to-date database tracking. And *that* requires at least a minimum of cooperation from members.

All membership fees are due on January first of each new year. Due *must* be sent to me

Membership
The Honourable Cordwainers' Company
616 SW Evergreen
Redmond OR 97756

Ultimately, I forward all checks to the HCC treasurer. But before I do I enter the information into the Guild database, which, in turn, generates all rosters, mailing labels (for newsletters, etc.), and membership cards. I do not have the ability (nor do I know anyone who does) to crank out membership cards one at a time...member cards are printed once a year (at the end of the first quarter) based on who is current for *that* year!! Mailing labels are based on who is in the database at the time of printing. and, similarly, the roster is updated once a year.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Important Notice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you fail to send your dues directly to me, on time, you risk not getting a newsletter, not having your name included on the roster and not getting a membership card.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New members are sometimes a bit taken aback at the pace (or lack thereof) of newsletters, updates and just general recognition of their membership. I sometimes get email expressing frustration and even a bit of alarm at having paid dues and not seeing anything in return. this is very understandable and we have been working to correct this situation. But please bear in mind that this is an all-volunteer organization. I know, I know...I am repeating myself. But it *bares* repeating.... Because it is a voluntary organization, there is no deadline in the world that can be imposed. Only the generosity and willingness to commit time and energy, of those few who are intimately involved, keep things running as smoothly as they do.

But for those who do feel like they are not getting a fair return for their dues...keep in mind that The Crispin Colloquy itself is sponsored and paid for by The Honourable Cordwainers' Company. It is a new endeavor for us. A better and, theoretically, hopefully, and potentially a more involving, enabling and complete sharing of knowledge than we have had the ability to implement in the past.

So let me pose this question to all members of the forum, whether you're a member of the Guild or not [filling the gas tank of a mid-size automobile costs more than annual dues these days]--

Would you miss the forum if it weren't here?

NEWS FLASH!!

The newsletter has just gone out...complete with new roster for 2000, board election ballots, return envelopes, the glorious and long-awaited 'Journal' of the HCC and about 20 membership cards --those who don't get a membership card are either not paid up or their dues (for 2000...which are supposed to be paid in January) have not been recorded for one reason or the other. Those who are sure they have paid should contact me.

The HCC 2000 AGM is set--different dates than the newsletter, but just confirmed this AM--it will be October 20, 21 & 22, at Old Sturbridge Village, Mass., hosted/organized by Peter Oakley, guild VP.

For those who are wondering the dates of the AGM are October 20, 21 & 22.

These dates were posted right here on The HCC Bulletin Board on May 4th. That's only two messages above this one. But dumb bootmaker (me) I forgot that most people get these messages through email and aren't seeing the May 4th message the way I am as I'm posting these announcements. My apolgies. I hope this clarifies things.

All members,

Just a reminder for all members of the HCC...dues for 2001 are payable in January of 2001. Those who pay later run the risk of not receiving a membership card for that year.

Past members who have not paid for several years are in arrears. Payments made in early 2001 will be applied to 2001, but membership would like to remind those folks that it costs--in terms of effort and money--to carry a delinquent member on the rolls. Your dues are an important factor in supporting the Guild and the projects that the Guild undertakes. The newsletter, membership cards, and even the rosters, require a financial outlay.

Please support The HCC and keep your dues paid up.

Thanks

This is to remind all members that dues are owed by the end of January. Those members who have not paid by then and/or those who (for whatever reason) wait to pay later, will very likely not get a membership card for the new year. I know many do not care if they get a membership card or not, but it *is* one of the more tangible of the small perks that come with membership.

Also, it should be noted once again that a portion of your dues goes to support the existence of The Crispin Colloquy. We have a bi-annual fee that we pay to maintain the domain name as well as the monthly fee we pay to maintain the website. [Contrary to popular myth, all those individuals involved in day-to-day maintenance and upkeep chores for The Crispin Colloquy as well as for The Crispin Courier--the newsletter--are volunteers who generously give of their time and energy for zero remuneration].
