Could we please remove the AGM announcement from August 16? It has an incorrect email address for me. The newer AGM announcement has my correct email address if anyone needs it.

Now that I am home I wanted to thank everyone who attended for a great H.C.C. AGM last weekend, and special thanks to Lisa and Dale Sorrell for their gracious hosting. A good time was had by all--renewing old acquaintances and making new friends. Thanks especially to our speakers, who provided a wide-ranging program that held something for every taste and interest., and to Marc Carlson, Al Saguto, and Lisa Sorrell for organizing a varied and valuable group of speakers and demonstrations. Exploring issues of style and functionality, Edward Maeder's presentation featured detailed paintings of boots and shoes in the Rijksmusuem's collection in Amsterdam, proving that what is old is often new again in the world of shoe fashion; Carina Eneroth's presentation on making woman's orthopedic shoes that look good showed the importance of restoring a customer's sense of ownership and style (and tips for doing it); and Kathleen Grevers discussed teaching students shoe design from concept to reality, a very important concept--sometimes we get too involved in the details--and highlighted her students trip to Italy studying the design process. Marcel Mrsan presented elegant and instructive information on finishing shoes, and inspired us all with his expertise, and the quality of his work: shoemakers in Europe generally get more formal training than is available here, and it shows in Marcel's work. Practical demonstrations included Dick Anderson's, who created a plaster cast of fellow speaker Lynn McNabb's foot, in preparation for making a very customized last. Lynn later joined us with her own demonstration of brain tanning, exhibiting skill and respect for the animals that provide leather that we use. Lisa Sorrell demonstrated her techniques for fitting lasts for cowboy boots, specialized requirements critical to proper fit and comfort in custom boots, sharing her successes and lessons learned. And Michael Anthony Camacchi shared his experience examining and reproducing the boots which Lincoln wore on that fateful evening in 1865, exploring construction methods and design features, including the creation of new leather finishes when needed, and displaying work of the first order. Complimented by great Oklahoma food and the company of fellow boot and shoemakers--it was a wonderful weekend!

The Honourable Cordwainers' Company
is pleased to announce the
31st Annual General Meeting
in cooperation with
The Savannah College of Art and Design
Savannah, Georgia[/center]

We are pleased to announce the Thirty-first Annual General Meeting of the Honourable Cordwainers' Company, in cooperation with The Savannah College of Art and Design. The conference provides opportunities to learn, and exchange knowledge on the history and practice of traditional shoemaking and allied trades.

The Honourable Cordwainers’ Company (HCC) conducts an annual general meeting during the weekend closest to the 25th of October, St. Crispin's Day. The HCC is a non- profit 501c (3) educational organization, incorporated in 1987 in Virginia, the home of America’s first English shoemakers. Founded in 1984 by a small group of shoemakers and historians, The HCC is dedicated to promoting the study, practise, interpretation and preservation of historical and traditional shoemaking and allied trades.

The guild promotes the historic preservation and research of the craft, forms, tools, techniques, artifacts and all other aspects of shoemaking and allied trades; and educates membership and the public about historical and traditional shoemaking and the allied trades. The annual general meeting includes a general business meeting, and educational presentations and lectures by members and guest-speakers, artisans and authorities, demonstrations, and visits to nearby museum collections, as well as an exhibition of members' work and tools and items for sale or trade.

The Savannah College of Art and Design was founded in 1978 to provide college degree programs not previously available in southeast Georgia and to create a specialized professional art college to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad. The curriculum was established with dual goals of excellent arts education and effective career preparation for students. Today, with multiple locations and online distance education offerings, SCAD continues to assiduously adhere to these goals.

SCAD exists to prepare talented students for professional careers, emphasizing learning through individual attention in a positively oriented university environment. The goal of the university is to nurture and cultivate the unique qualities of each student through an interesting curriculum, in an inspiring environment, under the leadership of involved professors.

SCAD boasts the most comprehensive Accessory Design program in the US, offering BFA, MA, and MFA degrees. Students learn a range of skills for the design and construction of footwear, handbags, and small leather goods.

Established in 1733, Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors, who enjoy the city's architecture and historic buildings. Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District, and 22 park-like squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States.

We look forward to seeing you in Savannah.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS

The theme for the program is “A Future Informed by the Past: How Tradition in Form, Function and Technique Inspires Shoemaking Today”

Presenters may cover a wide range of topics based on their area of expertise, and program elements will be combined to highlight how traditional techniques of the trade, elements of fashion and functionality of footwear are evident in the styles, materials and manufacture of footwear today.

The presentation topics will be divided between:
  • 1) Historical and academic presentations regarding the trade, its past and future, and:
    2) practicum demonstrations of techniques and procedures.
Suggestions for session topics may include but are not limited to: History of Footwear and Shoemaking; practicum/hands-on technique demonstrations; Modern Footwear and Making; Fashion History; Theory; Lasts; Tools; Orthopedics, etc. In addition to plenary speakers, the conference may also include workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers.

We invite you to respond to the conference Call-for-Papers. Presentations are recorded for the purpose of producing educational videos, which are made available for publication and distribution. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in a special edition of The Crispin Courier, the newsletter of the Honourable Cordwainers' Company. We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in Savannah in October.

Yours Sincerely,
Al Saguto, (dasaguto@widomaker.com)

Readers of the Crispin Colloquy are encouraged to visit the Facebook site Shoemaking Forum or shoesandcraft.com to find news of an upcoming shoemaking symposium in June 2015, and an exciting new shoemaking guild that is taking shape to serve the interests and needs of contemporary artisanal shoemakers.

We are glad to see these energetic people striving to form a new group, which has the potential to serve practical needs of shoemakers today – many of which the H.C.C. cannot provide as a non-profit organization.

The Honourable Cordwainers’ Company (H.C.C.) is a non-profit 501c(3) educational organization, incorporated in 1987 in Virginia by a small group of shoemakers and historians, dedicated to promoting the study, practice, interpretation and preservation of historical and traditional shoemaking and allied trades. Readers of the Crispin Colloquy are encouraged to visit the 'What is the H.C.C.' page on the hcc homepage for additional information. Our chartered goals are to promote the historic preservation and research of the craft, forms, tools, techniques, artifacts and all other aspects of shoemaking and allied trades; and to educate membership and the public about historical and traditional shoemaking and the allied trades.

Following the historical tradition – just as every province and city in the old world had its own shoemaking guild, each serving the unique needs of its own citizens – new organizations will form to serve the needs of diverse and lively communities. We look forward to continuing The HCC's mission, while congratulating our contemporary brother and sister shoemakers on their new efforts and wishing them every success!

Re: The HCC Bulletin Board

#125 Post by proxy_posting »

Many thanks to all who attended and presented at the HCC Annual General Meeting in October. Our 31st meeting was a wonderful event, and continued the tradition of education and preservation of the trade in the warm and welcoming Savannah atmosphere.

Special thanks to Michelle Quick and Marcell Mrsan and their colleagues at the Savannah College of Art and Design for hosting a terrific weekend event full of opportunities to exchange formation with fellow shoemakers and SCAD students during this collaborative program, and to HCC program coordinators Al Saguto and Marc Carlson. The weekend was a wonderful program including a wide array of topics featuring various aspects of the trade. Savannah’s historic architecture, picture perfect weather, gracious city squares, Live Oak trees draped in Spanish moss and excellent restaurants provided a welcoming backdrop for an informative and engaging gathering of shoemakers.

From October 23 – October 25, the HCC Annual General Meeting included presentations by a variety of historical and modern shoemakers in a program that brought traditional and contemporary techniques together in lively and interesting lectures, tours of the SCAD campus and faculty members’ workshops, and hands-on demonstrations by SCAD faculty. With the program theme “A Future Informed by the Past: How Tradition in Form, Function and Technique Inspires Shoemaking Today,” our presenters did an outstanding job in representing various aspects of the trade.

Thanks to each of our presenters for sharing their time and expertise:

Michelle Quick, Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design - The Benefits of Traditional Shoemaking Skills in Footwear Design Education – exploring the importance of a solid foundation in shoemaking skills to students engaged in studying footwear design, this presentation outlined the principles used in teaching SCAD students, Material Experimentation, Methodology Development, Silhouette Exploration, and Construction Methods.

Brett Walker, Journeyman Shoemaker, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation - Reinventing the Shoe? The Historical DNA of Modern Shoemaking – showcasing the roots of modern shoemaking in historical tradition, and highlighting the key elements of similarity in both technique, practitioners, and broader shoemaking community.

Anne Marika Verploegh Chasse, Kika Bespoke, Instructor at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in the Accessories Department and Instructor at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) in Apparel and Industrial Design for Footwear and Special Topic Courses - Collaboration in the workshop - a practical approach: Ideas, Materials, Techniques - Exploring past and current projects in the collaboration pipeline at Brooklyn Bespoke - a closer look – providing an in-depth look at the collaborative process between shoemaking partners for several special projects, highlighting materials, form, and design.

D.A. Saguto, Master Boot & Shoemaker, Department of Historic Trades, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Consulting Curator, Archaeological Footwear, Jamestown Rediscovery Project/Historic Jamestowne - Vanishing Footprints on the Past: The Archeological Footwear of Jamestown Island, Virginia 1607-1665 – explored the artifacts discovered on the island that housed America’s first permanent English settlement, and what they tell us about the English shoemaking tradition and its translation in the New World, the daily lives, challenges and resources of our nation’s first settlers.

Sarah Woodyard, Apprentice, Milliner and Mantuamaker, Margaret Hunter Millinery Shop, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation - Martha Washington: The First Lady of Fashionable Footwear – taken from letters documenting footwear purchases from her marriage and throughout her life, presenting a fashion-forward view of our nation’s first First Lady, as one of style and sensible substance.

Marcell Mrsan, Master Shoemaker, Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design – Traditions NOWADAYS - Where we come FROM and where we go – presenting an overview of the guild system in Europe in the 20th century, its impact on contemporary shoemaking, and exploring the challenges and opportunities facing modern makers, including technologies such as CAD and 3D printing, as well as marketing and collaboration between makers.

Edward Maeder, Costume & Textile Consultant, former Curator of Costumes and Textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, former director of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto - Asleep on your feet – A sheep on your feet: The Use of Wool for Fashionable Footwear 1700-2000 – stepping away from leather, this presentation gave a rich visual tour of shoes made with various woolens, from high fashion to everyday wear, 300 years of wool in shoemaking.

Dan Freeman, Freeman’s Leatherworks - Last Fitting: Art or Science? – I was honored to share my thoughts on various schools of last fitting, from the technical to the artistic approach, and what has worked for me throughout my career in shoemaking.

Zoe Rios, BOCPD, Prescription for Shoes - Pedorthics and Traditional Shoemaking – presenting a thorough overview of the most common foot maladies today, and exploring how properly made and fitting shoes can reduce the need for orthotics and preserve foot and musculoskeletal health.

Our Saturday presentations were followed by a Footwear Exhibition by SCAD Accessory Design students, showcasing their creative and artful designs.

Sunday’s hands-on demonstrations provided more great learning opportunities in the Accessories Design Studio at SCAD:

Michelle Quick, Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design - Tassels and Kilties: Pattern, Cutting, and Assembly – highlighted techniques and tips for artfully making footwear adornments.

Marcell Mrsan – Master Shoemaker, Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design - Footwear Patterning – demonstrating technique for patternmaking for a high-end men’s shoe, focusing on form, fit and style.

Candance Parton – Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design - Leather Rendering Techniques – demonstrating techniques for rendering shoe designs in two-dimensional form, interpreting materials, shape and fit in artistic fashion.

Damion Le Cappelain – Accessory Design Professor, Savannah College of Art & Design - Upper Making Techniques – presenting an overview of uppers assembly for a modern shoe, including skiving and piping techniques.

Again, special thanks to all those who presented, attended and helped put together a terrific event. Savannah is a beautiful city, and we were treated to many of its dining delights at such places as Johnny Harris, The Florence, Crystal Beer Parlor and Foxy Loxy Café – we certainly didn’t go home hungry for food or fellowship in the tradition of St. Crispin.

Yours in shoemaking,
Dan Freeman
