Re: Closing techniques

Hi all, I want to start practicing sewing leather by hand. At the moment I have some small needles, some thread that my shoemaker friend uses for his sewing machine for sewing uppers (he's not sure what it's made of)and a fine saddler's awl. Next I believe I ought to wax the thread and taper the end...

Re: Closing techniques

Cheers, DW. The way you described it sounds like what I have been doing. I'm gonna carry on practicing a bit more on scraps, then have a try on my quarters.

The book I'm using is Tim Skyrme's "Bespoke Shoemaking".

Re: Closing techniques

I've been having a try at skiving on some scraps of leather, and was hoping to chat about skiving a bit. Thus, far, I've become able to skive off strips of a few few cm long, 3mm in from the edge, with decent control. If I then try to skive the next 3mm in from the edge, I find it much harder to con...

Re: Closing techniques

Hi everyone, I'm hopefully gonna get some free time this week to head into town to get the tools I need to close the Derbys I'm making. I'm gonna sew them by hand, and was hoping to get some tips on buying the correct tools. To my understanding, I need the following things: >a fine saddler's (diamon...

Re: Glues and Cements

Hi everyone, Just back from my Chinese New Year holiday. Had time to consider, and my plan is to have a go at attaching the sole using a welt rather than cement. Here in China there's enough toxic substances in the air without me adding more... :sigh: Thanks for "awl" the help and information on thi...

Re: Glues and Cements

Hi DW, Thanks. My inclination is certainly towards non-toxic glues, I was just concerned I'd be making learning the basics of the craft more difficult my beginning with these kind of glues. The first pair of shoes I'm working on use adhesive to attach the sole to the upper (that is no stitching). Wo...

Re: Glues and Cements

Thanks DW. I did some digging around on the web and also found that it has a relatively short "open time" when it can be used. I also read that adding a small amount of alum can increase it's water resistance. I plan to begin my shoemaking with the most recommended synthetic glues and perhaps experi...

Re: sharpening knives

Hi all, I have 3 oil-stones at home, a Coarse India (similar to I guess around sandpaper 60#), a Fine India (sandpaper 340#) and a Translucent Arkansas (very fine). I hope to use them for my Tina skiving knife. My guess is that for my Tina skiving knife it'd be best to finish on the Trans Ark. Or do...

Re: Glues and Cements

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if animal/hide glue is ever used in shoemaking? Can strong hide glue be used to attach a sole?

Any ideas would be great.

Regards,

Russell Cook

Re: Pattern making

Thanks, DW.

I'm using Tim Skyrme's book and have started on drawing up the last standard, then onto marking out the pattern for a simple Derby shoe.

Re: Pattern making

Hi all, I'm an absolute novice and have just completed my first attempt at a mean forme. I've attached a picture, the mean forme together with the masking tape casts I used to make it. Would anyone be able to take a quick look and point out any obvious problems, or general comments? I also attached ...

Re: The Registry

Hi everyone, I'm Russell Cook. I live in Shanghai at the moment and am looking to get started with some basic shoemaking in my apartment. I'm thinking of getting Tim Skyrme's "Bespoke Shoemaking" book as a teach yourself guidebook. Has anyone tried this book? Btw, I tried to make a post on the "Open...
