Re: Pattern making

George Koleff's Shoe &Boot Desgning Manual has pattern grading methods in Part E.
I know of some who have used it.
I hope this helps.

Re: The Gallery

Yes, I found this interesting also. Thank you.
"Navaho" mocs have a similarity in the tunnel stitch technique.
I wonder if there isn't some crossover from Conquistadores?

Re: Of interest...

Duncan,
Lisa Sorrell has been attending the European shoe shows and competition. She may have some information for you.

And btw, I thought I'd let you know that lately I've been doing a back stitch on my Opanka Soles. :-)
With regards,
Paul

Welcome Curt! You have a classic start on your "hero's journey"! Several of us had our start in shoe repair. My first awareness of DW came from one of the Shoe Service of America Conventions, He tell you that his tutorial are aimed at such as us because of the "various assortment of tools and machin...

Re: Lasting

Hello Rod, First look, suggests you might be right about the leather. That's quite a bust out! Was it old leather or just "hard"? Either could be responsibly. Do you have a view of the last so we could see what style it was? From what we can see, it looks as if you've done a fine job. Disappointing ...

Re: Bottoming techniques

Thanks for your thorough answers Duncan. I've noticed the penchant for shortening amongst Aussies! Yes, I did mean 3cm, thank you for your gracious reply I saw a lot of wooden shanks in the 80s, many if not most of them broken in Western boots. Your 'boo seems like it would be stronger. I don't thin...

Re: Bottoming techniques

Duncan! Wow! What a great project and contribution to the "body of knowledge"! Clear and concise, and easy to follow. I was imagining myself running down to Home Depot to buy a length of "boo! (I love that) I'd probably pick up a new heat gun (mine surely would be tested to be on that long. You said...

Re: The Gallery

Wow Duncan!
Very impressive stitch!
Not just the outcome, but how you approached it and what you brought to bear to perform it.
I've been feeling rusty in some areas (if they ever were very honed) you describe.
I'm inspired.
Thank you,
Paul

Re: The Gallery

<Well...it's not my place...but I think (my very biased opinion only) that the bigger problem is the distance between the bottom of the facings and the first set of eyelets. It encourages the facings to "gap" open a bit. I sometimes put a little loop of leather just above the ankle and in the center...

Re: The Gallery

Thank you Martin. DW, yes it is. I tack stitched it about 3/4" to the medial side quarter, between the 5th and 6th eyelets. It's hidden by the lace mostly. Please don't let your eye linger on the glaring gap between the 2nd and 3rd eyelets. The results of inattention. And making the unwise choice to...

Re: The Gallery

Thank you Terry! I have to admit the stitch feature was borrowed from a vintage pair. (see attached) I liked it too! Simplicity. It works. But it's so visceral. We like when we see it, yet there's not much to see - with the eyes - but with the gut it can be another matter. On the other hand seeing t...

Re: The Gallery

Here is a very recent pair of boots which I have wanted to make for years. I did them with a stitched in counter vs. a pocket counter, which I have yet to wrap my head around. FYI, there are more than three things which I would work on for the next pair, too numerous and visible to mention. Alas...
