The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of The Honourable Cordwainers' Company will meet in Delavan, Wisconsin again this year from October 22 (Friday) through October 24 (Sunday).

We once again thank Larry, Cindy, and Crispin Waller for allowing us to invade their shop and home and for their congenial and generous hosting. Larry's shop in Delavan is well located for members coming from both coasts, and presents a comfortable venue for the gathering.

Larry is working on a real treat in the way of a presentation but more on that later. Suffice it to say...make your plans now to attend!! This should be a good one! (aren't they all?)

It is time to get ready for the HCC AGM for 2005. Larry and Cindy Waller will be hosting our 20th meeting at Walrus Shoe & Leather Co in Delavan Wisconsin on the 21st thru the 23rd of October.

"I AM GOBSMACKED!!!", says Frank Jones, commenting on the incredible presentation given by Bill Tippit. Jones, Tippit and the rest of the HCC membership were discussing the elusive "Last Trap", a curious and rare device, only known to exist among last makers, at the HCC Annual General Meeting, being held today at Walrus Shoe & Leather
Co in Delavan, Wisconsin.

"Feet are ugly", someone commented during the q&a session, which focused on working out how last measurements are made and methods to make lasts for hard to fit feet.

"Nonsense!" responded this female correspondent for W.S.H.O.E. News Network. "My feet look like bear paws, and my shoemaker-husband just loves 'em." No comment from the participants at the meeting followed, perhaps they'd all gotten too close a look at my size DDDDDDD shoes.

And gobsmacking it was. This year's meeting just ended in Delavan, WI, had all the qualifications; First, a lot of shoe and boot information--I learned a great method of handsewing rubber soles from Paul Kraus I'd been seeking for years, and the aforementioned lastmaking program of Bill Tippitt was invaluable, just for two examples--I learned more. Second, great friends, old and new, willing, nay eager, to help each other, proud of their own work and free with praise for others'. Third, a nice vacation weekend--good food, better accomodations, details taken care of by Larry, Cindy, Ken Holmstrom and our host, the truly world-class humorist Joe Martin. I won't speak of the livlier entertainments; after all, it *was* a convention.

Thank you to about 30 Cordwainers and Cordwainerettes who trekked to Wisconsin--I hope you had as rewarding a weekend as I did.

All are welcome to attend our 21st HCC AGM for 2006 in lovely Williamsburg, Virginia. To be held on October 27-29 2006, this year's AGM promises to be a wonderful follow-up to the excellent beginning of our 20th year at the Walrus Shoe and Leather Co. in Delavan, Wisconsin last October.

This year’s meeting will take place at the Bruton Heights Educational Center of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation – close to the hotel and, for spouses, many local attractions and sites. Veteran and charter members – and new members – are all welcome to attend this milestone guild anniversary gathering (our second in two years!)

A Call for Papers: The best part of our meetings is learning from each other. Come and share your research, skills or shop-styles with your fellow shoemakers. Anyone interested in giving a presentation, lecture, hands-on workshop or fireside chat is encouraged – please email dsaguto@cwf.org to let us know what equipment you might need and we’ll put you on the schedule. And, if you can’t attend, you can still give a presentation – just send us your DVD or VHS tape and we’ll include it in the weekend presentations.

SPEAKERS & HIGHLIGHTS
This year’s speakers will feature Val Povinelli, Shoemaker for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, on Archaeological Footwear of Old Philadelphia and Colonial Williamsburg: An Overview, and a special presentation by Colonial Williamsburg’s Harness Shop featuring Saddler Jim Kladder. Saddler Jay Howlett has offered a talk on 18th century leather breeches. In addition, we will have a special tour of the Jamestown Archaearium (www.apva.org/jr.html) on Sunday, Home of America’s first Cordwainers, the “Jamestown Rediscovery” archaeological dig has recently unearthed some of our oldest shoes.

There is plenty of space to display your work, so bring your “prizework” or tools to show, trade or swap, and anything else you’d like to share with your fellow shoemakers and leather trades enthusiasts. If want to share your prizework from a distance, mail it (insured) to HCC, c/o 5 Foxcroft Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Several members have shared from afar in recent years – it’s a great chance for others to see your work – and everything is returned promptly after the meeting.

More speakers are always needed, so please notify Al Saguto (dasaguto@cwf.org) if you would like to share a presentation or workshop. Slide and overhead capacity are available, as are DVD and VCR.

FRIDAY
We will meet in the lobby of the hotel between 3-5pm for registration ($20) and your itinerary of the weekend’s events. Then it’s off at 6pm for relaxation, fellowship and dinner at a local bistro. If you are planning to attend, or have any questions, please email mcsaguto@aol.com so that we can plan for the weekend meals (thanks).

SATURDAY
Our annual business meeting will start the day at the nearby Bruton Heights Educational Center – located within 1 mile of the hotel. Donuts and coffee will get us started and ready for our business meeting in the morning. Lunch is followed by our workshops and presentations on shoemaking and leather trades – remember, we need more speakers!

SATURDAY EVENING
Our annual “Feasting and Drinking” will take place in a special setting selected just for us. Please bring your favorite period costume – a Guild tradition – and we promise, nobody will look at you funny, after all, it’s the historic triangle. And for you polar bears, we are between two beautiful rivers with low, sandy shores….

SUNDAY
Sunday will begin with a group breakfast at the hotel, followed by our own tour of the Jamestown Archaearium. All of our local historic sites are gearing up for our nation’s 400th anniversary celebration in 2007, so this promises to be a very special tour. Then it’s back to the Bruton Heights Center or the Hotel for more swapping and brain picking, techniques and trade traditions.

Reverend Ronald S. Clark, of Fairfax, Virginia, went home on May 4, 2007. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Doris Clark.

Born in Midland, Michigan on March 5, 1925, Ron moved to Loudon County, Virginia and worked farms with his family during childhood. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and attended signalman school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving with distinction during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Euryale and the U.S.S. Caswell. After the war, he attended McKinley Tech in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Shepherd College with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts. While attending Westminster Theological Seminary in Westminster, Maryland, he met and married Doris Jeanne Good of Fairfax, Virginia.
Reverend Clark served in the Virginia United Methodist Conference until his retirement in 1975. Returning to Fairfax, he and his son Mark owned and operated R.S. Clark & Son, a contracting business, until 1993.

Whether known as the Beak, Squirrel, Reverend, or Daddy, Ron led a vivid life, marking all those who met him with his caring for people, sense of justice and simple, unaffected love. He was a bold splash of color on our canvas, always serving in the only way he knew, and felt privileged to walk among God's flocks.

He is survived by his children, Mark and Susan Clark of Roanoke, Marcia and Richard Peterson of Dumfries, Monica and Jefferson Hobbs of Frederick, Maryland, and Miriam and Al Saguto of Williamsburg, Virginia, his grandchildren, Christopher Tate, Ariel Clark, and Matthew Tate, sister Patsy Laycock and husband Joe, and brother William Clark and wife Nita, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Fairfax United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Virginia on Wednesday, May 9, preceded by a viewing at 1:00 p.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairfax United Methodist Church building fund.

Dale and I are excited to be hosting this year's Cordwainers meeting and we're looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

I've reserved rooms at the Sleep Inn for the weekend. That weekend is also a big event at the Lazy E rodeo arena in Guthrie. All hotels in Guthrie will fill up that weekend so I'd recommend that everyone go ahead and reserve their room! The room rate is $79.49 per night including tax. The phone number for the Sleep Inn is 405-260-1400. Ask for the Cordwainer's rate, or just the boot and shoe maker's rate.

On Saturday we'll be meeting at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum. This is one block from my shop. Our meeting room is in a historical building so we're not allowed to bring in food. We'll take a break and walk to my shop for lunch.

Everyone is welcome to stay around on Sunday too. I hope to have some speakers and demonstrations on Sunday. We'll do that in shop so we have access to any tools or equipment needed.

I haven't made firm dining plans for the weekend yet. We have a wonderful Mexican restaurant in Edmond that I want to make sure to include. Their meeting room only holds 35 people, but they also cater. I'd appreciate it if everyone who's planning to attend in October would call or email and let me know. I won't know how to plan with the Mexican restaurant until I get a head count.

We're looking forward to a great weekend in Guthrie, and thanks again to Lisa and Dale for being our hosts!

Some months ago...right after I had finished and posted for download Golding's Vol. I, I received a call from Frank Jones.

Frank called to congratulate for completing the Golding and to draw my attention to some fairly egregious spelling errors that had slipped past me in the early chapters. During the conversation, I mentioned that I had been re-viewing Thornton's Textbook of Footwear Manufacture and in passing I commented on how it was a shame some of the newer books were inaccessible to the public, and to projects such as my offerings of Golding, due to copyright issues.

Well, Frank mentioned that he had known John Thornton...and several weeks later I received another call from him in which he indicated that he might be able to obtain the rights to reproduce Thornton, and would I be interested in scanning and converting Thornton to PDF the way I had done with Golding?

I had thought that I was done with such projects. They can be very frustrating to format just right not only due to differences in typefaces and publishing methods in the past but it can be a long tedious job--roughly two years for each of the three volumes of Golding that I have done. But I was intrigued not only by the information in Thornton and the fact that it is much closer to our own time period but with Thornton's much more "commercial" approach (although he quite deliberately and correctly sees and presents hand techniques as the foundation of all modern manufacturing techniques) and have always felt that such information was as much a part of our heritage as the older literature and deserved respect.

And to tell the truth, I found that I kind of missed the early morning (4:30-5AM ) "workouts."

So, to make a long story short (as if) Frank got permission...legal permission...for the Guild to scan, digitalize, and post for free download, J.H. Thornton's Textbook of Footwear Manufacture the 1953 edition (that's because that is the volume I have).

All kudos go to Frank Jones for doing the leg work and for the "persistence of vision" to see it through. Thank you, Frank.

And a heartfelt thank you on behalf of myself and the Honourable Cordwainers' Company to John Thornton's daughter--Mrs. Judith E. Doherty--for granting the Guild permission to reproduce Mr. Thornton's work.

Coming sometime in the second decade of the 21st century.

A big thank you to all who attended our 25th Annual General Meeting in Old Sturbridge Village last weekend. It was another success, with the lovely New England weather (well, it rained a little), fall foliage at its height, and thirty or so cordwainers, old friends and new faces. Thanks for coming.

Special appreciation is due our hosts, Peter and Linda Oakley, for their gracious hospitality. They coordinated the facilities, festivities, and dinners--lunch, too (and don't forget Linda's homemade brownies!)

Thanks also to our presenters (in order of appearance), Bruce Graham, on getting started in teaching shoemaking workshops for younger cordwainers; Marc Carlson, historical tools (the basis of today's), and an interesting tour of references to shoes in literature; a 3-part patternmaking seminar, with Sharlot Battin, Nasser Vies, and Dan Freeman sharing three different perspectives; Nasser Vies (part deux) on making hand wax; and finally, on Sunday morning, Rob Elferink with Georgene McKim, on making custom orthotic footbeds and lasts, using the latest technology.

Although I attend to see my old friends, like most of us I profited from the meeting: sold some tools I wasn't using, bought others, learned three new sources for leather and tools, but mostly learned a little more about how other makers do their work. We hope we see you all--and more--at next year's meeting in Delavan, Wisconsin, at the Walrus Shoe Company, on St. Crispin's Day.
